Risk Register in the Context of Project Management Key Performance Indicators
The Risk Register is a critical Key Performance Indicator (KPI) within project management.
A Risk Register, also known as a Risk Log, is a master document which is often used in project planning and organizational risk assessments. Formula to Calculate Risk Register
Similarly to the Scope Baseline, the Risk Register isn't derived from a mathematical formula, rather it is a document that includes details about each identified risk, such as:
- Description of the Risk
- Probability of Occurrence
- Severity of Impact
- Risk Score (Probability x Impact)
- Proposed Mitigation Strategies
Here's a conceptual representation of a Risk Register's entries:

The Description of the Risk provides an understanding of what the risk is and what might trigger it. Probability of Occurrence is an estimation of how likely the risk is to occur. Severity of Impact signifies the potential consequences on the project if the risk were to occur.
Risk Score is typically calculated by multiplying Probability of Occurrence by Severity of Impact. This score helps to prioritize risks based on their potential impact on the project.
Proposed Mitigation Strategies are plans to reduce the negative impact of the risk or reduce its likelihood of occurrence.
